5 of My Favorite Ways to Drive Traffic to Client Websites

Let’s face it, we all wish we could create a website and people would just naturally come. They’d click on our pages, and buy our products and services.  But we all know that just isn’t the case. If you’re like most of my clients, driving traffic to your website is one of your top priorities. And not just any traffic, quality traffic.  You’re also probably like my clients in that you don’t have an endless advertising budget to pay your way to the top of Google or sponsor posts on social media. So what can you do to drive more traffic to your website? There are many different ways of going about this, but I’ve narrowed it down to 5 of my favorites.

Proven Methods to Drive Traffic to Your Website

Why are these my favorite? Because month after month year after year, client after client, these are the ones that have proven most effective. They work not only to drive traffic to the website but to drive quality visitors that are genuinely interested in their product or service.

  • Search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Email marketing
  • Blogging
  • Social media
  • Backlinks/ Podcast Interviews

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search engine optimization, better known as SEO, is the technique of optimizing your website and all of the content you create, to generate organic traffic – traffic you don’t have to pay for.

There are two primary types of SEO:

On-Page SEO is the process of optimizing your web pages and the content on your website. This includes the blogs and product pages by properly utilizing keywords, meta descriptions, titles, headers, images, and more.

Off-Page SEO is the action you are taking outside of your website. This includes things like backlinks to your website and your social media. Doing these things will drive additional impressions and website visits, impacting your rankings with search engines.

SEO may seem overwhelming at first, but once you know some of the basics, incorporating great techniques throughout your website won’t be difficult at all!

Email Marketing

Email marketing is one of my favorite ways to bring traffic to your website. In most cases, this traffic has already been to your site once when they opted in for your lead magnet or filled out a contact form. E-mail marketing takes nurturing over time but more often than not, when we look at the data, e-mail is a huge contributor to driving repeat traffic to your website. You can set up a welcome email series. Send loyalty emails, and send a message when action is taken on your site.

Blogging

This is another great tool that you can use to drive quality leads to your website. Google likes when sites are updated consistently while providing valuable information to people searching for particular topics. Similar to SEO, blogging can be a place where users land to learn about a particular topic. For example, in 2018 I wrote an article about macro and micro-content, and to this day, it is the single greatest organic blog that I have on my website.

I really love blogging because not only does it live on your website but you can repurpose it across different platforms in all sorts of ways. I great blog can be a major source of content.

Social Media

If you’re reading this blog, think about how you first heard about my website. More than likely it was social media. While this one can be a beast on its own until you perfect your strategy, it’s wildly effective in drawing traffic to your website.   Social media helps you build relationships, find new followers, and generate more sales. If done correctly, you will be able to effectively tell the story of your brand, your customer’s pains, and why you are the solution. And . . . drumroll – it can drive traffic to your website.

Backlinks/Referral traffic

Backlinks are simply links to your website that exist on other websites.  Some examples are a guest blog post, or perhaps you sit on a board of another business or sponsor an event. Most likely, when you are mentioned in these places, they will also link to your website. Other than social media, I have found the most success in growing my audience and driving traffic to my website from backlinks and referrals. Every time I am interviewed on a podcast I see a spike in traffic. This year I am also teaching within a community of retail businesses called Proof to Product, that website is a huge referral source for me.  The more you can establish credibility with other people’s audiences, the more you will see quality traffic driven to your site.
